Career
Holland's first band started in 1984 as Manic Subsidal. He began as the drummer but later became the singer and guitarist. The band changed its name to The Offspring in 1985 and got a record deal with Nemesis Records in 1988. Kevin "Noodles" Wasserman used to work as a school janitor before joining the band. Rumor has it he joined because he could buy alcohol for the underage members. Their first album, self-titled, came out in 1989. Holland later released this debut album with his own label, Nitro Records.
In 1991, The Offspring signed a new record deal with Epitaph Records and released another album called "Ignition." They followed up with another album called "Smash," which holds the record for the most sales generated by an album released through an independent label. This was their first taste of commercial success, and the album sold more than 11 million copies worldwide. During this time, Holland and his bandmates were credited with bringing punk music back into the mainstream spotlight. "Smash" included popular songs like "Come Out and Play," "Self Esteem," "Gotta Get Away."
The group then signed another record deal with Columbia Records and released several albums in the late 90s and early 2000s. These albums were "Ixnay on the Hombre," "Americana," "Conspiracy of One," "Splinter," and "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace." Although "Ixnay on the Hombre" didn't do as well as "Smash," it still sold 4 million units with popular songs like "Gone Away" and "I Choose."
The Offspring came back strong in 1998 with the album "Americana." They had hit songs like "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)," "Why Don't You Get a Job," and "The Kids Aren't Alright." This was the height of The Offspring's fame, but their success declined in the following years.
